Project KOS-MOS Case Badge

Case Badge

Next on my list of things to do was sort out the case badge. I wanted something different, so utterly unique that no one had ever seen before. That's when I thought of getting it milled from aluminium. Milling is basically machinery precision cutting that can work at sub millimeter sizes. You can pull off some really cool stuff if you have access to the gear and/or know someone willing to help out.

After calling around millers and scoffing at three-figure estimates on getting it done, I found a guy in Kidderminster who liked the idea of what I was doing and wanted to help out. He also offered the best price of a mere £35, so he got the job. Time to break out Illustrator and get me a vector of what I want.

For the badge itself I decided on getting KOS-MOS' forehead emblem milled.

After sending him the plan I headed off to Kidderminster to see how it was going. He had already made the template for the badge and the text would be added after the initial work was done.

The badge arrived a week later in need of a damn good polishing. Although he screwed up on the text in making it lowercase instead of upper, I decided to let him off as he did the whole job for such a good price for the industry. I might get it amended later on after I finish the case if it starts bugging me and people start noticing it.

One polish job with some fine Wet 'n' Dry, rubbing compound and lots of elbow grease later and it was like a mirror. Ready to take pride of place on the drivebay door.
